There are as many alcohol stories as there are people who drink. I grew up in a home where alcohol was used to celebrate and to relieve stress. My family was divided into those who drank "normally" and those who were "alcoholics". I didn't really start drinking in until I was in my 30s. I drank for fun and only on weekends in those days. Later, I started drinking after work, occasionally.
Throughout my 20 years as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner working in acute and critical care, I witnessed the devastating individual and societal consequences of alcohol. Yet, like most US adults, I drank. I was convinced I was one of the “normal” drinkers because I was nowhere near hitting rock bottom, nor did I experience immediately life threatening consequences from drinking. Like many people, I was convinced that drinking relieved stress and that my drinking wasn’t a problem.
That all changed with the COVID-19 pandemic. I noticed that my alcohol consumption had increased in both quantity and frequency. I drank for stress relief and the pandemic was stressful. Is it any wonder my drinking ramped up? Many healthcare professionals are voicing similar experiences and concerns. I was on a personal growth journey at the time, and knew I’d get farther along faster if I quit numbing myself with alcohol. So, I decided to give it up. At the time I was consuming 3 glasses of wine most every evening, and sometimes more. Each morning I’d say to myself, “I’m not going to drink today”. Then, at the end of the day, I’d find myself with a glass in my hand without even thinking. I’d make plans to drink only on weekends, but by Wednesday the plan was out the window. Can you relate?
One day I simply had enough of thinking about my drinking and feeling shame and guilt for my inability to moderate. I found Annie Grace and her This Naked Mind website and joined the free 30-day alcohol experiment. Once I completed the 30-day alcohol experiment, I joined the year-long PATH program. I’ve not had or even wanted a drink since August 28, 2021 (two days before joining the PATH) and I can say without hesitation that I do not miss it or crave it. I have no more desire to drink alcohol than to drink motor oil. This kind of freedom is rooted in becoming aware of and changing our subconscious beliefs about alcohol. Not drinking is awful when you constantly feel you are missing out or being deprived of something. True freedom comes from not wanting to drink.
The same techniques I used to gain freedom from alcohol are helping me create a life from which I no longer wish to escape. I was so impressed by the science behind the program methodology and results that I studied to became a Certified This Naked Mind Coach. It gives me profound joy to help others learn and apply the techniques that helped me to change my life.
I have a doctoral degree and have spent the past 20 years working as a Neuroscience nurse and Neurosurgery Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. My education and experience were ineffectual against my subconscious beliefs about alcohol. I had to learn new techniques and put them into practice. Only then did a new world of possibility emerge for me. I'd like to show you how to do the same for yourself.
